Tintin in the Congo
Following the success of his first adventure, and with his popularity well-established, Tintin was back on the road, destination Africa. For this story, Hergé was still improvising in the style characteristic of Land of the Soviets, but nevertheless also developed a loose plot. As Tintin makes a name for himself in the kingdom of Babaorum, playing the diverse roles of teacher and witchdoctor among others, he manages to outsmart a syndicate of gangsters intent on achieving outright control of the Congo diamond trade. The Adventures of Tintin, Reporter for "Le Petit Vingtième", in the Congo (1931) clearly reflects the paternalist and colonialist views common in the early 1930s, the time the original first edition (in French) was published.
