Just as Alfred Hitchcock made furtive appearances in his films, Hergé couldn’t resist joining in the adventures of his characters. He discreetly drew himself into the scenery, appearing as a reporter dutifully taking notes when Tintin embarks for the Congo, or interviewing a local in front of the gates to Marlinspike Hall, in hope of gaining the latest on the story of the broken glass in The Calculus Affair. In Hergé’s universe, it’s hard to find a character that has been created from scratch: most were inspired by real people who were either close to the author in some way, historical figures or celebrities at the time.

Abdullah

Prince Abdullah is clearly the caricature of the child king: you literally can't refuse him anything, and he has no equal when it comes to pushing adults to their limits. Just as in Tintin in the Land of Black Gold, in Red Sea Sharks the youngster provokes Captain Haddock, Snowy, Professor Calculus and Tintin himself, when it's not at the expense of poor Nestor, who by the end of this second adventure is completely exhausted by the antics of this delinquent child.

Hergé claimed to have been inspired by real-life details to create this young spring-loaded snake. "Abdullah, the unbearable spoiled brat, I know a lot about him, and I'm sure you do too.
