Just as Alfred Hitchcock made furtive appearances in his films, Hergé couldn’t resist joining in the adventures of his characters. He discreetly drew himself into the scenery, appearing as a reporter dutifully taking notes when Tintin embarks for the Congo, or interviewing a local in front of the gates to Marlinspike Hall, in hope of gaining the latest on the story of the broken glass in The Calculus Affair. In Hergé’s universe, it’s hard to find a character that has been created from scratch: most were inspired by real people who were either close to the author in some way, historical figures or celebrities at the time.

Status: Leader of the Sons of the Dragon Secret Society

Wang Chen-yee is the father of poor Didi, a victim of the effects of Rajaijah, the terrible poison that makes you crazy, but above all the founder of the Sons of the Dragon Secret Society, which fights against the ravages of opium in China. He is Tintin's unfailing ally in this battle, which also pits him against Roberto Rastapopoulos's gang, and he is also fighting against the Japanese invasion.

Mr. Wang is also known as Venerable; he certainly shows signs of old age: his beard is white and he uses a walking stick for getting around. But the years have in no way dulled the strength of his determination. And it is with astonishing calm, showing nothing of the anger that fuels him, that he acts to counter the evil actions of the opium traffickers who are poisoning his homeland, under the tyranny of Rastapopoulos and with the complicity of Mitsuhirato, who combines the lure of profit with Japanese territorial ambitions.
