Just as Alfred Hitchcock made furtive appearances in his films, Hergé couldn’t resist joining in the adventures of his characters. He discreetly drew himself into the scenery, appearing as a reporter dutifully taking notes when Tintin embarks for the Congo, or interviewing a local in front of the gates to Marlinspike Hall, in hope of gaining the latest on the story of the broken glass in The Calculus Affair. In Hergé’s universe, it’s hard to find a character that has been created from scratch: most were inspired by real people who were either close to the author in some way, historical figures or celebrities at the time.

Pablo

First name: Pablo
Occupation: Enforcer

In the original French black and white version, Pablo (Paul in French) was called Manuel Paolino. He is in charge of eliminating Tintin for 5000 dollars. His client is a certain Rodriguez, himself a front man for R.W. Trickler. Pablo, this villain who plots against the righteous, repents towards Tintin after the latter, overcome by a feeling of temperance and pity, lets him go during the assassination attempt against him. Pablo saves Tintin from the firing squad by organising his escape.

In Tintin and the Picaros, Pablo is one of the cast members. He cultivates not the best of his nature but the worst, as he takes part in Colonel Sponsz's Machiavellian plan to eliminate Tintin, his friends and, at the same time, General Alcazar in the middle of the jungle. At the end of the story, Tintin again forgives him for his betrayal.
