Characters

Just as Alfred Hitchcock made furtive appearances in his films, Hergé couldn’t resist joining in the adventures of his characters. He discreetly drew himself into the scenery, appearing as a reporter dutifully taking notes when Tintin embarks for the Congo, or interviewing a local in front of the gates to Marlinspike Hall, in hope of gaining the latest on the story of the broken glass in The Calculus Affair. In Hergé’s universe, it’s hard to find a character that has been created from scratch: most were inspired by real people who were either close to the author in some way, historical figures or celebrities at the time.

Mohammed Ben Kalish Ezab

Surname: Ben Kalish Ezab
First name: Mohammed
Status: Emir of Khemed
Tintin in the Land of Black Gold - page 36 vignette C2
Distinctive feature: In his elegant traditional outfit - white dishdasha, dark bisht and keffiyeh - with round glasses and a black goatee, Ben Kalish Ezab is determined to eliminate his enemies.
In the gallery of characters created by Hergé, Mohammed Ben Kalish Ezab does not go unnoticed. As well as his clothes, which already evoke in our minds all the exoticism of the Middle East, he is also distinguished through behaviour that runs through all the colours of the rainbow: cold anger, exuberant words, maudlin sentimentality, it's all about excess and flamboyance.
A man of extremes, he joins his son Abdullah in the category of characters ‘always on the verge of a nervous breakdown’. Of course, there are periods of remission, but they are usually short-lived and inevitably lead to new verbal and behavioural extravagances.
The presence of Tintin and Captain Haddock seems to have a calming effect on this unusual personality. But this is without Snowy, who unwittingly causes quite a stir in the Emir's lair. Mohammed Ben Kalish Ezab sets off pointing his finger at another character, questioning them in an authoritative manner.
