Just as Alfred Hitchcock made furtive appearances in his films, Hergé couldn’t resist joining in the adventures of his characters. He discreetly drew himself into the scenery, appearing as a reporter dutifully taking notes when Tintin embarks for the Congo, or interviewing a local in front of the gates to Marlinspike Hall, in hope of gaining the latest on the story of the broken glass in The Calculus Affair. In Hergé’s universe, it’s hard to find a character that has been created from scratch: most were inspired by real people who were either close to the author in some way, historical figures or celebrities at the time.

This shady intermediary tries to bribe Tintin who, then, as Colonel - Aide-de-Camp to General Alcazar, does not allow himself to be corrupted in a matter regarding an oil concession. This new concession in the Gran Chaco region, on the borders of San Theodoros and Nuevo Rico, could lead to armed conflict between the two countries. Trickler insisted on annexing the coveted part of Nuevo Rico.

Tintin dismisses the $100,000 bribe out of hand. Tintin may not be aware that in some countries bribery is an essential condition for doing business. His refusal almost cost him his life... He escaped death twice. After an attempt was made on his life, it was the repentant Pablo who saved him from the firing squad. Trickler makes another silent appearance in The Calculus Affair (page 47, vignette D2). He looks well-groomed and always carries a briefcase.
