Characters

Just as Alfred Hitchcock made furtive appearances in his films, Hergé couldn’t resist joining in the adventures of his characters. He discreetly drew himself into the scenery, appearing as a reporter dutifully taking notes when Tintin embarks for the Congo, or interviewing a local in front of the gates to Marlinspike Hall, in hope of gaining the latest on the story of the broken glass in The Calculus Affair. In Hergé’s universe, it’s hard to find a character that has been created from scratch: most were inspired by real people who were either close to the author in some way, historical figures or celebrities at the time.

Cutts, a taciturn butcher
Mr. Cutts is a worthy representative of that category of small independent businessmen we all know: he has chubby and rosy cheeks, a fairly pronounced bald spot, and he has the tired look of someone who gets up early to work in his shop.
He has the most famous telephone subscriber in The Adventures of Tintin. But he remains undaunted by the barrage of prank calls.
A running gag. Cutts the butcher's shop is typically one of those gags that run over several pages, sometimes over multiple books of The Adventures of Tintin, and delight Hergé.
So what do we know about Cutts the butcher's shop and its owner? Not much, apart from the fact that the butcher (or one of his assistants) delivers his orders in a ‘Volkswagen Combi’ and that he is particularly helpful.
And while we finally get to see his face, his bald spot and his little moustache, the sight of his shop, which displays a few ordinary sausages and cuts of meat, leaves us wanting more regarding the character's psychology.
